Conceptual Physics
Physics contributes to our ability to question what we are told about our world and the Universe beyond. Physics also supports innovation and the creation of next generation technologies. This module presents an overview of core physics concepts that underlie both questions of global significance, and the development of future technologies. No prior physics knowledge is required. You do not need calculus or advanced mathematics for this module, but you should be comfortable, for example, adding fractions, using scientific notation, and with algebraic manipulation. This module is not a pre-requisite for any programme and designed as an elective module. Topics covered include: Energy and thermodynamics; Gravity and Relativity; Waves, Light, and Electromagnetism; Quantum Mechanics. Applications discussed will include Climate Science, Sustainable Energy, Medical Technology & Communications Strongly recommended texts: Physics and Technology for Future Presidents: An Introduction to the Essential Physics Every World Leader Needs to Know’ by Richard A. In practice
Two one hour lectures a week at good times, very simple continuous assessment (short quizzes). Most time is spend just understanding the content. If you did physics for leaving cert, you’ll know 80% of the course already!
